Gulf Islands Medical Imaging is a specialized breast imaging center in Pensacola focused on advanced breast cancer screening for women with dense breast tissue. Using Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS), we provide whole-breast imaging designed to help detect cancers that may be hidden in dense breast tissue.
For women with dense breast tissue, traditional mammography may not detect all cancers. Additional breast cancer screening with Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) can improve detection by imaging the entire breast with sound waves rather than radiation.
What Dense Breast Tissue Means
Dense breast tissue is common and completely normal, but it can make it more difficult for mammograms to detect certain cancers. Whole-breast ultrasound screening can improve cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue.

Why ABUS is Different from Handheld Ultrasound
Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) and handheld ultrasound both use sound waves to image breast tissue, but they are designed for different purposes.
Handheld ultrasound is typically used to evaluate a specific area of concern, such as a lump seen on a mammogram or felt during an exam.
ABUS, however, is designed to perform systematic whole-breast screening, especially for women with dense breast tissue.
Key differences include
• Whole-breast coverage – ABUS captures standardized images of the entire breast.
• Reproducible imaging – the automated system scans the breast in a consistent pattern.
• Radiologist review workflow – images are interpreted at a workstation designed for breast screening.
• AI-assisted analysis – additional tools help highlight areas that may need closer evaluation.
Because of this standardized imaging approach, ABUS can detect cancers that may be difficult to identify in dense breast tissue on mammography alone.
Who should consider ABUS
Women may consider Automated Breast Ultrasound if they:
have dense breast tissue
want additional screening beyond mammography
have a family history of breast cancer
want a radiation-free screening option
What to Expect During Your ABUS Exam
An Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) exam is designed to be comfortable and straightforward. Most appointments take about 30 minutes from start to finish.
During your appointment:
1. Check-in
Our team will review your information and answer any questions before the exam begins.
2. Preparation
You will lie comfortably on an exam table. A warm ultrasound gel is applied to help the sound waves travel through the breast tissue.
3. The scan
The ABUS scanner gently moves across the breast to capture three-dimensional images of the entire breast. Unlike mammography, there is no compression and no radiation.
4. Image review
Your exam is interpreted by a breast radiologist, with additional AI-assisted analysis to help identify areas that may require closer evaluation.
After the exam
You can return to normal activities immediately. Results are reviewed by the radiologist and communicated according to your provider’s recommendations.
